Briar is a wood, a rock-walled tree that grows in the Mediterranean, and its perennial root nodules are best suited for pipes.

This kind of root material is quite hard wood, and the briar wood itself has the function of absorbing water,

which can completely absorb the water in the tobacco without affecting the taste of the tobacco.

Since 1850, briar wood has become the most popular material for making pipes,

because it is beautiful and durable, has beautiful wood grain, heat resistance and water absorption. After years of practice and exploration,

it has become the wood with the best effect for making pipes. The vast majority of briar used to make pipes today comes from Italy,

France, Greece, Corsica and Spain.

Albania and Algeria were once rumored as other sources of briar, but today’s international situation makes it impractical to grow briar in these areas,

as the dangers are everywhere.

Briar has only one source, the robust tree, scientifically speaking, a thin shrub, 15-25 feet tall, usually found on the rugged, rocky,

overgrown shores of the Mediterranean. Not an endangered species. However, it is not the tree itself that is used for pipe making,

but the hardest root nodules on the tree are dried and cut into profiles or blocks to make a pipe.

Many high-end custom pipes are carved from Corsican briar, which has the fine grain of Greek briar but is less dense. actualIn fact,

during the wartime period of the 1940s, when briar was hard to come by,

Corsican nanmu was used for pipes at the same time as Algerian nanmu, as they were very similar in many respects of the material,

especially in terms of density and grain.
